Okay, I restrained myself this long, but it had to come out (yes, it's come out in a few e-mails, too), but dang. "Sunday."
What got me into Atlantis? Well, having Jack and Daniel really helped. They had some great lines ("What say we skip to the part where you start talking real fast?" and "Jack, it's not too late for me to..." "No." "I-I-I could just grab my..." "No." "...kit."); it's actually a fun Jack'n'Daniel episode.
But why keep watching? Because of Rodney and Carson, obviously. Hey, I like the others. But Rodney and Carson made me love this show. When I heard Paul McGillion had been made a regular for the second season, I cheered. Quite loudly.
When I first heard the rumors, I disregarded them. After the episode had aired in England, even though I was waiting for it to air on SciFi, I knew; I couldn't dodge all the reports. I watched. And I managed not to cry when Carson died; it was the next scene, with Rodney in Carson's quarters, that had me sobbing. (Yes, I wept like an idiot. Sue me.)
And for what? I love Janet. I cried when Janet died, too. But her death seemed meaningful; she died in the line of duty saving someone's life, and it couldn't really be helped. I mean, we can argue about mistakes that were made, but it happened really fast. I found it persuasive, and a fitting tribute to the medical personnel in uniform.
Carson died because of an exploding tumor? And Rodney feels like it's his fault because he wouldn't go fishing? The Exploding Tumor machine is the dumbest Ancient device yet. And for heaven's sake, let's not add guilt to Rodney, who is generally a jerk even to his friends and could no doubt find plenty of guilt without having ducked out on the fishing.
The best thing Weir can say about Carson is that nobody filed a complaint against him? Get me rewrite!
And now there's spoilers for next season, so if you don't want to know, stop reading NOW.
No, you don't get any extra spoiler space if you've followed the rant this long. (Is anybody still here?)
I am ridiculously thrilled that Carson is returning, if only for two episodes. I started reading Mallozzi's blog largely to see what he had to say about the whole affair (and yes, the food porn and the cute doggie photos and everything else sucked me right in and I read daily now). I feel like we've been had. Whether Mallozzi planned it in cold blood, kind of saw it coming, or is just pleased at how things have turned out, the man created a publicity machine by killing Carson. You can't buy this kind of publicity; look at this article Carson is Back and see the list of outlets covering Carson's return. Many, many thanks to the Save Carson Beckett people (who are both tenacious and polite--oh, and did I mention effective?).
And I'll be writing my letter to try to get SGA renewed for season 5--along with my letter to Mallozzi to beg him to bring Carson back for s5.
So Mallozzi gets exactly what he wants. And as long as I get what I want (a fifth season, with at least some Carson), that's great. I think I'm willing to be used.
It just grates a little.
