Weird Al's first album, Weird Al came out 40 years ago today!
NPR's Stephen Thompson gives a top "40 Songs From 40 Years Of 'Weird Al' Yankovic" here. There are songs that just don't belong on that list. I'd put more straight parodies on—ok, many of his originals really gross me out. But where's the brilliant Crosby, Stills, and Nash pastiche "Mission Statement"? "Why Does This Always Happen to Me?" which I never identified as in the style of Ben Folds until I just looked it up now? Why is the parody "Living in the Fridge" not there? And why are the two Star Wars songs and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" not in the top five?
Most importantly, I want to remind all of you who have been with me since 2007, and tell those of you who have joined me since: Weird Al sat in my lap. I'll refer you back to the original post for that one.
I am surprised to find that this will make the sixteenth time I have used the tag "weird al." I mean, he's an important part of my life, but I didn't realize I wrote about him that much!
Happy Weird Al day, y'all!
(Brilliant Husband is off in another room playing the original vinyl of that first album, but I can't really write when I'm listening, so I'm not there.)
