Weird Al's first album, Weird Al came out 40 years ago today!

NPR's Stephen Thompson gives a top "40 Songs From 40 Years Of 'Weird Al' Yankovic" here. There are songs that just don't belong on that list. I'd put more straight parodies on—ok, many of his originals really gross me out. But where's the brilliant Crosby, Stills, and Nash pastiche "Mission Statement"? "Why Does This Always Happen to Me?" which I never identified as in the style of Ben Folds until I just looked it up now? Why is the parody "Living in the Fridge" not there? And why are the two Star Wars songs and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" not in the top five?

Most importantly, I want to remind all of you who have been with me since 2007, and tell those of you who have joined me since: Weird Al sat in my lap. I'll refer you back to the original post for that one.

I am surprised to find that this will make the sixteenth time I have used the tag "weird al." I mean, he's an important part of my life, but I didn't realize I wrote about him that much!

Happy Weird Al day, y'all!

(Brilliant Husband is off in another room playing the original vinyl of that first album, but I can't really write when I'm listening, so I'm not there.)

I know I haven't posted much in 2014. I've been reading a lot more than I've been writing, if that's any help! To try to get back into LJ, I'm reusing this meme from [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2. I am, however, apparently incapable of giving a single answer to most of the questions. Below a cut for length )

Except for the first one, I don't have much to say about these—just enjoy!

This five episode set of short videos was made to publicize a con, but I think it's funny and I can't even tell you where and when the con is. It's characters living in a magical world playing an RPG in our world: "Cubicles and Careers". I've linked to Episode 1; that links to Ep 2 and so on.

Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal and the Superfluous Female Protagonist.

"Cat and Lynx Become Inseparable Friends".

"'Weird Al' Yankovic On Parody In The Age Of YouTube"—with clips from his new album, Mandatory Fun.

(Also: I love that I have a miscellaneous group of links but have at least one tag I've already created that fits each.)

I can't find a way to embed this, but I can give you a link: "Perform This Way" by Weird Al. It's just the song, not an actual video.

NOTE: There is some text on the screen, but THE TEXT IS OUT OF DATE. Lady Gaga has approved the song; it will be released as a single and a video will be made. Proceeds will go to the Human Rights Campaign. See The Gaga Saga and then Gaga Update for the story direct from Weird Al's blog.

Oh, dear. The Sherlock obsession continues apace. Great new icon from [livejournal.com profile] ciudad . . . and then I found this vid. Well, someone had to do it.

Warnings: no food or drink while watching this. I mean it.
Spoilers for Sherlock—I'm afraid I can't remember which episodes, so I'd best say all.
Only a minute, and don't shut it down the moment the credits roll.

Well, it was really a date with Brilliant Husband, but Weird Al was there! We attended a Weird Al concert last night! Longtime friends will remember this entry, when I used the excuse of Weird Al's birthday in 2007 to post the story of my first Weird Al concert, where he sat in my lap. Yes, he sat in my lap (go read the old entry now; this one will still be here when you get back).

I'm sorry to say he didn't sit in my lap again, but he didn't sit in anyone else's lap either, so I had no major cause for jealousy. More detail from last night )

It's not like I have loads of cool icons. It is, however, very much like I'm still enjoying my expanded userpic space! So I'll do the meme all the cool kids are doing...if I can do this right Some of my icons, let me show you them )

Meme instructions:
1. Reply to this post and I will pick five of your icons
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose if you damn well feel like it.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

I heard on NPR this morning that Weird Al Yankovic turns 48 today! Happy birthday, Al! I feel like we're on a first-name basis because we've been so very close. The story--and the photo )
