Since Child is in another state again this holiday, Brilliant Husband and I are just having a small Thanksgiving at home for two: fish stuffed with herbs, wild rice, sweet potato polenta, homemade cranberry sauce, peas, and a chocolate silk pie. BH is responsible for all of that except the polenta and the pie. And I somehow missed when I looked back over the recipe last night that it really is one to make the day before and refrigerate overnight so that it can set. I just remembered that last time we made it, it got soggy before we were done.

So the pie may not be set tonight.

What I enjoy the most about this holiday, though, is time with loved ones. (Don't get me started on the fantasy history that underlies this holiday in the US; I don't want to harsh anyone's squee.) BH and I were able to Zoom with Child and my family, and we get time together. I wish we could be with more family, but we'll see more at Christmas.

I hope those of you who are celebrating also get time with people you love.

A happy Easter to all who are celebrating it in any way!*

* And for those in Eastern churches who are celebrating in May, I wish you a happy Easter in advance, because my odds of remembering in May at the end of term are very bad.

Happy New Year to all of you! May you have a healthy, prosperous, and peaceful 2024!

We spent most of Christmas week with Brilliant Husband's younger brother and family, plus our Progeny, who did not pass Go, did not collect $200, and never came home for the holidays but went to the family gathering instead. It's the first time, and I'm a little sad. But we did have roughly five full days with her; she got in before we did and left before us as well for various reasons. I'm glad I got to spend time with her at all!

The younger generation are doing great. They are lovely, smart, funny people.

For Christmas, my brother gave me Prophet by Sin Blaché and Helen Macdonald, and I devoured it, or it devoured me, and now you must all read it so that we can talk about it. I know Rydra Wong has multiple posts with many threads on it, and I'll be going back there too, but I want to talk with you all too! And without spoiling anything, because I knew nothing except that people were saying "You MUST read this book" the way they said it about This Is How You Lose the Time War, and people were right.

Merry Christmas to all who observe it (or observed it yesterday, since I'm so late in the day in my own time zone).

We have been fortunate to spend it with extended family. So much food! So much fun! (I have had to retreat to a distance because the fun is a little too intense, but that's ok!)

I'm glad you all made it through 2022, my friends; I know it was very difficult for some of you!

A virtual toast to a better 2023 for all of us!

A merry Christmas (or Christmas season!) to all who celebrate it. May you be safe, warm (but not hot!), and able to spend time with people you love or be by yourself as you prefer.

Happy Easter to all who celebrate it on the Gregorian calendar! (I'll try to remember to come back to wish those on the Julian calendar a happy Easter on May 2, but I gotta admit, the odds are not good).

I've had both my shots, Brilliant Husband has had the first, and Progeny has an appointment real soon now for her first.

I went to my first Easter Mass in two years. We wore masks and stayed distanced, we had no baptisms or confirmations, but it was joyous, and I'm so grateful I could go!

And Progeny is now 20, for those keeping track. Can you believe it?

I hope you are all well!

Yes, I know it's not Sunday, but Sunday was even worse than today (if you watch US news, you know what I mean), and I didn't have the heart to share anything funny. Today, I feel I can share.

Sunday was Pentecost in many Christian churches. Red is the color of Pentecost. Catholic churches in my state reopened for Pentecost, although we're still dispensed, meaning we are not required to go. In normal times, Catholics are required to attend Sunday mass plus certain holy day masses ("holy days of obligation," they're called) unless ill or traveling (and urged to try to attend if traveling). So not a lot of people went. I stayed home and watched mass on a live stream.

Saturday night, though, I put it all together. Only the priest and deacon have to wear the liturgical color for the day, but a lot of lay people (including me) enjoy doing so for special days such as Pentecost. "My gosh," I told Brilliant Husband. "We're reopening the churches tomorrow—and they're going to be full of Red Shirts." (I just hope it wasn't prophetic. And I wore a red dress to attend mass from home.)

I also remembered, as I do every year, that time many years ago when my home parish had a celebration of Pentecost. After mass, there were goodies, including a cake. Someone called someone else and told them what to have the bakery put on the cake: three crowns, for the Trinity.

Only something got lost somewhere along the way. We had a Happy Birthday cake for the Church decorated with three clowns. There were a number of mystified people, but the cake was good (and my mom knew the story and told us).

And to all who celebrate Easter, Happy Easter!

Things got away from me again!

At least it is still Hanukkah, so happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate!

And happy belated Christmas to all who celebrate that! For Catholics, it's still Christmas season until Epiphany, or technically until the Baptism of Christ, which is the Sunday after Epiphany. And now Catholics in the United States celebrate Epiphany on the Sunday after Epiphany (proper, Jan. 6), so our Christmas season extends until January 12. So I'm actually early! No, wait.

I hope you are having a good week, whatever you celebrate (or don't).

Happy solstice, y'all!

And gosh, it's hot here in Florida. WeatherUnderground tells me it is currently 92° feels like 101 (or 33/38), and it's June. July and August are usually worse. But I have friends with similar weather in places where air conditioning isn't the norm, so they are far worse off.

Sun, shine on us gently, please!

Happy Easter to all celebrating it today!

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there! Whether you're a biological mother or an adoptive one (and hey, nobody said the kid had to be human), or you just mother those around you—enjoy the day.

Hugs to everyone who has lost someone and so finding this day painful. I hope memories bring you some joy and comfort too.
