Yep, you read that right. Simon Pegg will be playing Scotty, according to reliable sources: trekmovie.com and trekweb.com.
I've seen Shaun of the Dead, and I loved it, though I'm not a zombie movie fan. Congratulations to Simon Pegg. He's a talented man, and apparently he's a fanboy. Good luck to him.
Nothing against Simon Pegg, but I am deeply disappointed it's not Paul McGillion. I thought Paul would make a great Scotty. He's got the accent, he totally has the looks (look at the pictures at the Save Carson Beckett site! Brilliant Husband and I were shocked at how close the resemblance is; it has been a while since we've watched TOS).
I do hope the new Trek movie turns out well and that we can enjoy it.
I very much hope that the flurry of publicity helps Paul McGillion get a good new role--and maybe some appearances in s5, assuming Atlantis is renewed.
ETA: forgot to add that James Cho has been cast as Sulu.

Not even a hint of regret that Paul McGillion didn't get it? :( I do like Simon Pegg, but I like Paul McGillion even better.

Meh. I'm just taken on McGillion. Yes, I am extremely pissed off about the way Bridge dropped him from the Atlantis cast. Not only that they dropped him, but the way they dropped him. Exploding tumors?? Really??
While McGillion could have done very well as a young Scotty, I personally feel Pegg is a better choice between the two.
I keep thinking that Paul doesn't even have a natural accent. Am I wrong on this? Not that it was affecting my decision...

He does come by his accent honestly--and Simon Pegg has no "natural Scottish accent"! Seriously! I've little doubt he can do it, but there are at least a few Scots very unhappy that an Englishman was named Scotty! They'd rather see a Canadian have it than an Englishman!--sorry, where was I?
I wish I could give you a proper source and link, but I've read several interviews with Paul McGillion over the past couple of weeks, and I can't tell you where I read what. (IMDb's minibio is rather sketchy.) Paul's family moved from Paisley to Canada when he was two, so he began learning language in Scotland. His parents and at least some of his five older siblings (he's sixth of seven, and six are boys--Mrs. McGillion has my respect, nay, admiration! I have my hands full with one Small Girl!) kept their Scottish accents, so he grew up always hearing Scottish accents. His family moved back to Scotland for a couple or a few years when Paul was in his tweens, if I recall correctly (I want to say he was eleven at the time, but I might be wrong) before moving back to Canada for good.
So Paul McGillion is bidialectal (whether you call it "natural" or not would get us into an argument about what's "natural" in language, but he grew up that way). He speaks Scots English when he's in Scotland (on one discussion board a Scot who'd heard him at a con in Glasgow said he did "full-on Weegie" the entire time he was speaking there), Canadian English in Canada, and what must be a slightly watered-down Scots accent for the show. (In A Dog's Breakfast, he does decent American English for Ryan and Colt, with Colt, the hero in the space opera Starcrossed doing a sort of David Duchovny heroic monotone. It's hilarious with the dreadful dialogue he's spouting.)
Sorry. I teach History of the English Language and get into dialects and being bidialectal a lot; I think it's fascinating. Hope I didn't put you to sleep two paragraphs ago.
