Second the motion! I could never quite work out what "asshats" was supposed to mean anyway, or at least how it was supposed to mean. Brilliant Husband's explanation is that it means one puts a hat on one's ass, or one is thinking with one's ass. But it's not the head or the ass that seems to be the operative root here, it's "hat," and I just can't wrap my head around that.
Arse-ropes is pretty clearly an insult any way you look at it, and I do believe it's possible to intuit the meaning without help from the Middle English Dictionary.
