Well, that was an episode for which the first two of the season really didn't prepare me.

Sadly, William Russell—Ian Chesterton—has died at the age of 99: obituary from The Guardian

He had a long life, and he returned for a cameo a couple of years ago; I was thrilled to see him.

May he rest in peace.

Two entries in one day! Maybe I can even start posting more than once in a blue moon again!

"The Devil's Chord" was surely as silly as "Space Babies," and yet I had a different reaction.

spoilers )

Oh, and by the way: from what I've read, "the devil's chord" was not universally banned in the Middle Ages, but some musicologists at the time said in their systems it shouldn't be used because it was too dissonant and unstable. Any time I see someone say that something was banned in the Middle Ages, I have to look it up. They're wrong more than half the time, I think.

I'm behind on Doctor Who, and honestly, I didn't feel very inspired to post after this one. It's weird how differently I reacted to this than the one that followed.

A happy Easter to all who are celebrating it in any way!*

* And for those in Eastern churches who are celebrating in May, I wish you a happy Easter in advance, because my odds of remembering in May at the end of term are very bad.

Happy New Year to all of you! May you have a healthy, prosperous, and peaceful 2024!

We spent most of Christmas week with Brilliant Husband's younger brother and family, plus our Progeny, who did not pass Go, did not collect $200, and never came home for the holidays but went to the family gathering instead. It's the first time, and I'm a little sad. But we did have roughly five full days with her; she got in before we did and left before us as well for various reasons. I'm glad I got to spend time with her at all!

The younger generation are doing great. They are lovely, smart, funny people.

For Christmas, my brother gave me Prophet by Sin Blaché and Helen Macdonald, and I devoured it, or it devoured me, and now you must all read it so that we can talk about it. I know Rydra Wong has multiple posts with many threads on it, and I'll be going back there too, but I want to talk with you all too! And without spoiling anything, because I knew nothing except that people were saying "You MUST read this book" the way they said it about This Is How You Lose the Time War, and people were right.

Merry Christmas to all who observe it (or observed it yesterday, since I'm so late in the day in my own time zone).

We have been fortunate to spend it with extended family. So much food! So much fun! (I have had to retreat to a distance because the fun is a little too intense, but that's ok!)
I was pretty happy with "The Star Beast" (as long as I didn't think too much about the plot), and I was even happier with "Wild Blue Yonder" (and did not think too much about the plot."

I just discovered today that the next special dropped yesterday, and here I am eight days after seeing "The Star Beast" without having written about it!

I wanted to give myself time to sort out my feelings, because sometimes I change my mind after a bit. Not this time.

Spoilers! )

Plot? What plot? Very little about the narrative made sense. I don't care. I was totally there for the characters, and I got what I wanted, but now I want more!

We saw The Marvels today, and the only other movie I can remember giving me such laughs is Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. Go see it! So I can squee with you once you've seen it!

I think you can get along without knowing the full backstory. I'm not sure it makes a lot more sense for having seen Captain Marvel, WandaVision and Ms Marvel than it would have without. They do give brief explanations of the powers and of how Monica got hers, but the recap of Carol's and Kamala's powers only make sense if you already know. Seriously, though, I don't think you need that to enjoy it.

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly's latest update, I've now seen the longer trailer!

ETA (18 Sept): that video became private. I hope this one won't.

My husband saw it during a football game, and then I could only find the shorter version, so I didn't see what he saw. Everyone appears in this one, including (I think) the new people.
I had been assuming that Quantum Leap would not be back until the strike was settled, but it returns Wednesday, October 4, in the 8 pm time slot! That gives it a chance for higher ratings (though it may also increase the need for higher ratings; I hope that won't be a problem. It means that I can watch it the night it airs! Because 10 pm was too late for me. I don't sleep if I watch tv that late.

Here's ScreenRant's story on s2. It's a little repetitive, as if they just kept adding to it instead of re-editing it.

Two new regulars are being added, neither of whom is Janis, which disappoints me a little. I really wanted to see more of her (and still hope we will). One is going to be "a former special forces operator and current U.S. Army Officer who's reportedly overseeing the Quantum Leap project," which worries me that we won't see Magic much. I can't find any news on Ernie Hudson leaving the show, so I hope he isn't. I know he did a movie recently, The Retirement Plan, and I wonder if that conflicted with some of the filming? But also, he is nearly 80.

And here's the teaser trailer, which I think looks like they drew the pieces almost entirely from s1:
I was just watching a video on YouTube (a Dreamwidth vlog entry, actually, and I bet the poster will know who she is!), and I found this:

I had a cat around my feet when I started watching, but I reacted quite enough that the cat quickly departed and has not returned.

Rydra Wong alerted readers that Prophet by Sin Blaché and Helen MacDonald is $1.99 for Kindle for a limited time at Amazon. I have read enough about the book and the authors that I want to read it, so I grabbed it. I normally use and highly recommend a local indie bookstore or Bookshop.org and try to avoid fueling the Amazon beast, but this was too good to pass up.

Some of you may recall that we live in the Tampa Bay area, and Hurricane Idalia came through overnight. We were lucky: we didn't even lose power. We had hours of rain overnight and then much of the morning and afternoon (Unfortunately, it didn't break the heat! It only added humidity!)

But people not that far away may have lost a lot to flooding, and apparently there have been at least two deaths. So I can't seriously complain.

Remember this?

That seems to be the first trailer for White Collar! They appear to have made it entirely from the pilot/premiere.

I loved that show even while I felt I shouldn't. I loved the cast. I loved the characters. A few months ago, when the kinds of fics I read in the fandoms I liked seemed to be drying up, I thought I'd look back. Some of you have noticed, because I've been commenting on your fics from a decade ago or more! (Some of which I read before, and I don't seem to have commented much—or I read it somewhere other than AO3 the first time? That's more likely.)

I'm back into White Collar, and I still don't know why. The cast is mostly beautiful (Willie Garson is not beautiful, ok?). I love the characters. I hate some of the things they do.

Thoughts on the first two episodes (the second time) )

Here I am, trying to be better about posting! I know I haven't kept y'all updated on my life, and I do mean to do that, but baby steps first (Spoiler about My Life, though: we're doing well, apart from living in Florida.)

Someone recommended this movie, and I now have no idea who. But I watched it on Netflix, and I recommend it. Warnings after the trailer, and spoilers under the cut.

It's a fairly low-budget movie, so don't be surprised at the effects. I've been a Doctor Who and Blake's 7 fan for decades now; I didn't come here for the effects.

I love the cast, and it's well-directed and written. There's humor, science fiction, action, and human drama—my favorite mix!

I was very disappointed when I checked IMDb the day I saw the movie that most of the people behind it had done little or nothing since, which I'm sure has nothing to do with the fact that they're Black. /sarcasm. The good news is IMDb now lists writer/director Stefon Bristol as directing a movie coming out next year, Breathe, starring Milla Jovovich, Sam Worthington, Common, Quvenzhané Wallis, and Jennifer Hudson! So I will be watching for that! I'm still surprised that the other writer and some of the stars are not doing much that's in IMDb, especially Eden Duncan-Smith, the lead.

Warnings: violence, racism, racist violence. I hadn't even watched the trailer; I saw it recommended, read a blurb, and got blindsided. This movie ripped my heart out and stomped on it. Then it carefully put my heart back and repeated the process, because it's a time travel movie. It's worth it, though.

Has anyone else seen this and want to talk about it with me? Or simply not bothered by spoilers? Spoilery discussion )
If you have seen Spider Man: Across the Spider-Verse, you must remember that there's a whole scene done in Lego. (If you haven't seen it, I hope you can soon! But this post is not spoiler.)

If you know much about Lego, you know how much work that is. It's a wonderful scene.

Even more wonderful? The creator is fourteen-year Preston Mutanga. Mutanga made his own complete Lego version of a full, 2:18 trailer for the new movie and posted it to Twitter in January of this year. The producers saw it and were blown away, so they contacted him to do a full scene in the movie! Full article here.

Also, a piece on the first hijabi Spider-Woman, featured briefly in the movie.
