And by the way, will someone please come get the Rolling Stones out of my head every time I think about the Doctor's companion?

I was glad we'd waited long enough to see this one that we only had to wait two more days instead of a week (and then because of our schedules; it was already out there) to see the finale.

Should I take it as a given at this point that anything resembling science will not actually be science? It's a Time Window: you can look but you can't interact. Except when you can, of course, It's never done that before, of course. And the memory of a time machine is more real than the memory of anything else. Sure! How does the TARDIS write itself back onto the VHS tape? That's perhaps easier to answer than why it snows when Ruby gets emotional. But never mind all that.

My other big gripe is that for a show that prides itself on its diversity, it's awfully quick to kill the Black dudes. I could predict who was going to go first: the Black UNIT officer, Sue Triad's Black assistant. Guys, buy a clue! It's embarrassing. (And didn't we all figure out that Colonel Chidozie was missing long before anyone else?)

I found a lot to like, though! I'm always happy to see UNIT. I love Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and her merry band of weirdos (that's not an insult; I'm a weirdo myself). I love the exchange when the Doctor asks about a time window and Kate starts telling him what he said in the 70s about why they could never have a time window and he interrupts to ask where it is, and she cuts the monologue short to tell him. UNIT does what the Doctor tells them not to; the Doctor does what UNIT tells him not to. The more things change, the more Doctor Who keeps playing the same old hits.

I like how the Doctor is really thinking about Susan again. Since New Who began, or after the Time War, if you like, we've had Doctors who keep getting tangled up with families, whether they want to or not. Rose comes with a mother and a boyfriend (whom she treats badly, and pretty much everyone else does too; again, that's not quite how you want to get more characters of color into the show!). We also had Martha's family, who saved the world; Donna's, whom I love; and so on. It's about time he faced the fact that he has some family—biological, apparently!, or at least another Time Lord (do we still say Time Lady?). If his companions can reconnect with their families, why can't he?

And Mel is family now too. It's funny how happy I was to see her, previously and in this episode, after how happy I was to lose her in her original turn. I think Bonnie Langford herself has said that she really learned tv acting after that season. A lot less screaming than I remember!

This episode didn't feel like it got us very far because we still had to wait for the finale, of course. (I wanted more! More episodes!)
