I said more or less this to [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2, but I thought I'd share it more broadly in case it helps console anyone else.

Brilliant Husband helped me get down off the ceiling the night we saw the movie by pointing out that the events of the movie are not only AU but part of a closed time loop. I kept arguing that it was insane for Nero not to try to do something to avert the disaster, instead of (or in addition to) getting revenge. Well, he is, of course, insane. (I think most insane characters are the products of lousy writing, by the way. It's not true of all of them, but well over half, I think. I'm not making light of mental illness, I hope; I think writers abuse vague concepts of mental illness far too much.)

Everyone else not being insane, the remaining Vulcans will be mobilizing for the future. Romulus will be evacuated so far in advance of the supernova it won't be funny. Moreover, Vulcan agents will neutralize Nero and every one of his crew long before they have a chance to go round the twist, on any provocation. (I shudder to think when Vulcan agents might find the "logical" time to neutralize the perps might be.)

So as time marches forward again, Romulus will not be destroyed, therefore Vulcan will not have been destroyed--oh, heavens, I've caused a paradox, haven't I? Well, it's worth it! The universe will revert to its original state with cheesy but not tragic (or juvenile delinquent) Kirk, Spock and Sulu with their voices in the proper register, an Uhura with too many smarts to get involved with someone not only outranks her but goes mad with lust once every seven years, a Nurse Chapel and Yeoman Rand who actually appear on screen, an Amanda who lives to see her son reborn after the Genesis device, a Chekhov with a bad bowl haircut, and a Scotty who isn't quite that . . . quite that. Dr. McCoy, amazingly, looks much the same to me (but not to [livejournal.com profile] abyssinia4077, so she will be very relieved to get the real one back!).

I left one of my favorite bits out of my reaction to the movie: the very, very end. Leonard Nimoy did the voice-over but they used "where no one" instead of the outdated "where no man"--and they played the original theme.
