Yep, you read that right. Simon Pegg will be playing Scotty, according to reliable sources: trekmovie.com and trekweb.com.
I've seen Shaun of the Dead, and I loved it, though I'm not a zombie movie fan. Congratulations to Simon Pegg. He's a talented man, and apparently he's a fanboy. Good luck to him.
Nothing against Simon Pegg, but I am deeply disappointed it's not Paul McGillion. I thought Paul would make a great Scotty. He's got the accent, he totally has the looks (look at the pictures at the Save Carson Beckett site! Brilliant Husband and I were shocked at how close the resemblance is; it has been a while since we've watched TOS).
I do hope the new Trek movie turns out well and that we can enjoy it.
I very much hope that the flurry of publicity helps Paul McGillion get a good new role--and maybe some appearances in s5, assuming Atlantis is renewed.
ETA: forgot to add that James Cho has been cast as Sulu.
