We managed to see Moon! I hadn't even heard of it until Brilliant Husband asked me if we wanted to see it. "What?" I asked. He repeated the title and told me that David Bowie's son had made it. "David Bowie has a son?" Then one of my friends said it was really good, and we managed to make time to go.

I won't tell you much about the plot, because I went in knowing virtually nothing, but the one thing I knew that I didn't see in the first five minutes of the movie was a bit of a spoiler for me. Sam Bell is finishing a three-year stint alone on the moon, working at a station where he collects helium to send back to earth for energy. He's eager to see his family in two weeks. His only companion is an AI named Gerty (voiced by Kevin Spacey) who can operate a variety of mechanical arms and oversees the station. Naturally, things start to go wrong.

I found some of the shots very reminiscent of Space 1999, but the movie a whole lot smarter and more sensible than Space 1999! It's what I like in SF: not fundamentally about the science, but with solid enough science that a little slip or two really jumped out at me, and it raised some issues related to science (and its uses). The movie is a character drama, with a lot of suspense--I found parts downright frightening, so take that R rating seriously. It's really quite thoughtful. Sam Rockwell stars, and he's great. (For some reason, he reminded me terribly of Scott Bakula, particularly as Sam Beckett. I don't think it's just that everyone here seems to be named 'Sam', either.)

I'd love to discuss some aspects, but a) that would introduce spoilers and b) I don't know if any of you have seen it! So maybe I'll start a discussion post if people have seen it and are interested.

If you haven't seen it, do see it if you can. It seems to be in limited release; it might be hard to find. It's one for the Netflix list (or equivalent) if you don't get to see it in the theater.

Oh, and David Bowie's son is Duncan Jones, who wrote the story and directed. I don't know that I've heard of him before.
