NEW FIND! Here's the news sent around by Jack Niles, the incoming president of the International Society of Anglo-Saxonists:
"Fast-Breaking News department:"
"Members of ISAS still buzzing about the sensational Staffordshire Hoard discovered recently in the U.K. may not be aware of another startling archaeological discovery made this past summer. A new round of excavations sponsored by Roskilde Museum at Lejre, Denmark (corresponding to the
Beowulf poet's "Heorot") has revealed yet another hall-complex located there, in addition to the ones discovered in 1986-88 and 2004-05.
"Of special interest is a Viking-Age hall that, at 60m in length, is the largest prehistoric building now known from southern Scandinavia. (The hall at Yeavering is about 25m long, in comparison.) Surprisingly, the newly-found hall is built right on top of a grave, while other high-end graves have been found outside the hall. These excavations have been described as "epoch-making" in their implications. Lejre is now being compared to Jelling (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) in terms of its significance for early Danish history.
"Attached is my translation of a pair of articles, reporting on this development, that are currently posted in Danish on the Roskilde Museum web site. One is a press report based on a television program that was broadcast last month. It may be some while before more systematic accounts of the excavations are published."
