I'm pretty sure that I never noticed the lack of women the first time I read The Hobbit, and what might have spurred me this time was watching the press conference. They had Martin Freeman and the actors playing the dwarves, and it struck me that I was looking at a huge cast and they were all men--fifteen men, and the only woman I could see on camera was the one who introduced them. I thought, "Well, the women just aren't hobbits or dwarves." Then I realized I couldn't name a single female character.
Then I reread the book, and I still couldn't. I enjoyed it anyway.
I saw the movie 2001 before I read the book, which may have shaped my reaction. (You have to get past the first half hour. It isn't really good until after that! Borrow the DVD and skip the first thirty minutes!)
