Among other productive pursuits today, I watched a video clip on YouTube on . . . ahem . . . problems with the Danish language. The audio portion is not quite safe for work (so put your earbuds in or watch from home, Mabi, because you'll want to see this). Just over four minutes, and I don't want to oversell it, but I think I hurt my jaw laughing. There's also a two-minute sequel (not quite as funny). Embedded videos )

"New Tracks" by Aelfgyfu
PARTS: 20 plus epilogue
RATING: FRT (fan-rated teen: violence, occasional bad language)
CATEGORIES: Drama, angst, hurt/discomfort, some humour; AU, fix-it
SUMMARY: Noel Miller tries to find his place on Nick Cutter's team; Stephen Hart tries to find his way back onto the team; and Nick has to deal with them, creatures from the past, and his own stubbornness.
SPOILERS: Everything through 2.07 and my own story "Fresh Scars"
WARNINGS: Some tasteless humour, some medical detail
AUTHOR'S NOTES: Many thanks to Brilliant Husband ([livejournal.com profile] dudethemath), [livejournal.com profile] kristen_mara, and [livejournal.com profile] lukadreaming, all of whom acted as betas and made many helpful suggestions and corrections. All remaining errors, infelicities, and poor judgement are my own.
DISCLAIMER: Primeval and its characters are owned by Impossible Pictures, ITV Productions, M6 Films, Pro 7, and possibly other entities I couldn't easily find on IMDb. No copyright infringement is intended, and indeed the story probably won't make sense unless you've watched. So watch the show, buy the DVDs, etc. I do not profit from fic except insofar as comments make me happy.

aelfgyfu_mead: Aelfgyfu as a South Park-style cartoon (Very angry indeed)

Skip my next paragraph if you've had it with the FB and Twitter nonsense, but please read about Pingback. I got a shock, and I haven't seen anyone mention this yet.

Okay, you've probably all heard about LJ allowing easy cross-posting to Facebook and Twitter. It appears that if someone replies to one's post and quotes one's post, and selects cross-posting, then the quotations from one's post will appear on someone else's FB or Twitter account (even if the LJ entry was locked). I am Annoyed, but I hadn't really worked up to Very Angry Indeed. I have my pseudonym; even if someone cross-posts with quotation from me, I wasn't awfully worried that I would be outed. (You can read about the new cross-posting buttons here on LJ news.)

Important Stuff: Pingback is Screwed Up
The same LJ news bit mentioned changes to pingback, which, when turned on, notifies you that someone has linked to one of your entries. Then rydrawong posted on Dreamwidth (x-posted at LJ, but you can't reply there) that pingback is now sending people snippets of text surrounding the link to their own journals, even if the post was locked and they shouldn't have access. For instance, if Poster A has put up a fanfic, and Poster B trashes it to her little band of friends with a link to the story, Poster A will get a notification that could include an eyeful.

I had Pingback turned off. I almost never link to anyone's post to say anything mean, but there have been a couple times when, in friends-locked entries, I asked if I was being unreasonable to complain about a story lacking proper warnings or to suspect plagiarism. I know I had Pingback turned off, because I never ever received any notifications that anyone had linked to me, and that was okay. When I saw people complaining about Pingback, I double-checked my settings here this morning. Pingback was disabled. I didn't change anything. I'm wondering if I twitched or something and accidentally changed the setting. It's possible, but....

A few minutes ago, I posted a new installment of my Primeval story. I went my merry way to do the next two steps: I posted an entry at [livejournal.com profile] primeval_denial linking to the new installment, and I put the link on the story's launch page on my own journal as well.

I got pingback e-mails for both entries as fast as my screen could refresh. I did not have Pingback turned on. I went back to my Privacy Settings, and it had changed from "Disabled" to "Open." I have now fixed it. I recommend everyone recheck their Pingback settings again.

One of the pingbacks says basically nothing, though both entries are public. The other one can be seen here: as you can see, that's 186 words. I'm leaving them both up as cautionary tales.

ETA: Rydra does say in comments to her entry that she has heard from other people that they're getting pingbacks with the feature disabled.
