export "hundreds of thousands of tons" of food. The change? The World Bank, in the name of free trade, pressured the government not to subsidize fertilizer; Malawi followed its dictates until the 2005 election, when the new president reversed course.

Part of me is horrified to think how many people may have died in the name of "free trade" (particularly when the pressure is brought by countries that heavily subsidize their own agriculture, such as the US).
