Fannish update
I keep meaning to post and not doing it! I will try to make some shorter posts instead of the kind of longer round-up that I'm not likely to finish.
I discovered that my fanfic site The Mead Hall went down, probably in late November 2012. I have been paying it so little mind that on the rare occasions I have looked in the last 18 months, I have found it not working and made a mental note to talk to Brilliant Husband and then promptly lost the mental note. I have done this at least twice before I realized that it's really down! On the other hand, my ownership of the site expires in July, and I'm not paying for it again, so I'm letting it go. I am in the process of moving my fanfic all to AO3; you can find me here.
I have 18 stories up now. None of my Primeval or Stargate: Atlantis stories have made it yet, but they will be there; if you want a specific story added that I haven't yet put up, just let me know, and I'll put it at the top of my List of Stories to Move!
Also note that I have given up on writing recommendation posts. I just can't manage to do it. I have been saving up Sherlock stories for a rec post, and I just don't think that's ever going to happen, because I've mostly gone off Sherlock except for stories by a few writers, and I cannot find the motivation to make a post for a fandom where I'm hardly doing any reading. Most of what I did mean to rec, I bookmarked on AO3, so you can go to that link above, click to see my profile, and then find my Bookmarks in the left-hand menu.
Moreover, I suddenly fell into Marvel and Captain America fandom. (Okay, more honestly: Winter Soldier fandom, with healthy sides of Captain America, Sam, and Natasha, though the proportions of those vary.) Aware that I can't manage rec posts, I have begun trying to make slightly fuller summaries of stories I'm bookmarking as recommendations so that not only can I remember them when I look back, but friends can decide whether they might want to read each.
On the downside, I realized yesterday that I appear to have tagged fully half the stories I've bookmarked "friendship," and I suspect I'd have tagged a lot more that way if I'd been tagging for people other than just me when I started making bookmarks. And "friendship" actually describes what attracts me to nearly all these stories, so you might not find it a useful tag if you decide to search my bookmarks.
Behind the cut: a brief summary of Where I Am in Fandom, for those who are curious—and to help me remember what I might want to tackle in individual posts. This list may change as I think of something else I want to remember.
I'm Done
Almost Human: I'm sorry for those who liked it that you've lost it. I thought it had promise. I had serious problems with actions by characters, including the human lead, that ultimately made me leave the show well before the season and, it turns out, series finale. Michael Ealy, you were fantastic, and I hope you get something good. Karl Urban: I loved you as Bones. I know you didn't write the thing, but couldn't you have made your character a little more . . . human? Yeah, I know that was part of the point, but still.
Downton Abbey: it was the first or second episode of the latest season, and they had a warning at the start of the episode, and I thought they weren't going to go as far as they did. I clearly didn't take the warning literally enough. I never watched again, and what little I've heard since makes me glad that I never watched again. DA, I'm done. Really done. I felt like I should have quit some time ago. Sibyl was my favorite of the sisters.
I'm (pretty much) Done
I gave up Big Bang Theory. I hit my limit on hipster racism and misogyny. I have always felt that I was right up against that limit, and then I realized that Brilliant Husband was being delayed in viewing episodes because I never wanted to watch. If we had time for tv, I wanted something else. That's not a criticism of anyone still watching! BH did alert me to watch a particular episode and scenes from a different episode featuring James Earl Jones (the scenes WITH JEJ, naturally). I am in the odd position of still caring about the characters and wishing some of them didn't make me dislike them so much when they opened their mouths.
I'm Not Sure
I'm not happy with Sherlock this season, which really deserves a post—but how do I find the motivation to write a post that might just be a rant? I don't want it just to be a rant, because I have enjoyed a lot of the show and still love the cast. I am almost certain to watch the next season. I don't know what to say when my friends in real life start raving about the show. When everyone's happy, that's cool. When I'm not happy, I don't want to get into too much detail about why I'm not happy because I want to detail it here. I'm only reading fanfic that makes me happy (usually specific writers' universes), or very occasionally fanfic that doesn't necessarily make me happy but deals with what I'm not happy about in ways that show me I'm not the only one, if that makes any sense.
I'm also not happy with White Collar for multiple things this past season. They were renewed for a six-episode wrap-up, and I know I'll watch them all. Again, I'm being highly selective in my fic reading.
What I'm Still Watching
I have one episode of Warehouse 13 to go and might even see it tonight! Please do not spoil it! (I'm not too happy with one direction the recent episodes have gone, but I'll wait and see if they go all the way before I complain.)
Broadchurch: I thought this show was outstanding. I have no idea what they will do in a second season, but I will totally be there.
Castle. I enjoyed a lot of this season, though parts were stupid. The fact that the last episode of the season was unremittingly stupid and its cliffhanger really honked me off, I'm trying to put to the side. I'll definitely be there in the fall. (Meanwhile, has anyone seen my rubber band gun? Some writers need a few hints about things not to do in the show.)
Doctor Who: I have complaints. At some point, I'm totally going to tell you them. But I still haven't missed an episode (even if there was at least one I wish I'd missed).
ETA: Elementary—thanks to
joonscribble for the reminder! I can't believe how fast that fell out of my head! I'm unhappy with one particular thread this season, but really pleased with almost everything else, and I must write a post about this show. Great show, love the characters (well, most of them).
This is My Show Now!
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: you will probably never see me write the full and correct title again. You might not have seen it this time, because IMDb doesn't count "Marvel" or "Marvel's" as part of the title. I wasn't sure I'd stick out the season from the first few episodes, but my gosh! Melinda May! Phil Coulson! FitzSimmons! I've even come to like Skye! DID I MENTION MELINDA MAY?! We couldn't watch the season finale the night it aired. The next day, I was taking a flight out of town. I delayed going to the airport until after we'd finished the season finale, and y'all know me: I'm the person who wants to be at the airport in excess of the 90 minutes before the flight they say to be there. That tells you how much I care about this show. THERE WILL BE A POST ABOUT IT.
Okay: what'd I forget?
