I'm very fond of "Fostering Relations" myself. That's one that started as a kind of parodic response to kidfic and then became serious and grew a Bill Lee subplot and went places I didn't expect.
I ended up researching Old Persian (Wikipedia has an article here, though I'm pretty sure I used more than that) and trying to research Persian food. Iended up settling for Iranian food, which is not always identical. I read Wikipedia on Iranian cuisine, I looked up menus of Persian restaurants—and I think the only thing that ended up in the story was that they had something like lamb, after I'd done all that reading about herbs spices. It made me hungry.
And now I'm hungry again and want to go back to Reza's, where I had real Persian food many years ago (which might possibly have flavored my setting of the story, and the meal details left out), but Reza's is in Chicago and I'm in Florida, so I'm not going there anytime soon—and you're probably hungry now too.
