I fear that Willis, and I guess King (haven't read him much), has become so big that publishers don't really want to sic an editor on it. They were really baggy, shapeless novels that could have been gems.

Yes. I have some hope that now she will; apparently Blackout/All Clear is the novel she has been wanting to write for decades, so perhaps she has it out of her system.
