Contemplating July activities

After a couple of years of really struggling with mood and creativity, between burnout and family issues and god knows what (and I know I've been hard to deal with in fandom, at times), things are suddenly ... good! I can write again, I'm signing up for exchanges, whatever has been blocking me has gotten a whole lot better.

July is my birthday month, therefore Best Month, obviously, and I would really like to try to do some kind of "post a short fic every day" thing if I can make it work. Unfortunately I'm suffering a dearth of appropriate challenges, because of course now that I want one and have the mental bandwidth to do something with one, daily month-long prompt challenges and/or bingo card challenges for July are nowhere in sight. The closest thing is July Break Bingo, but I've asked for cards for this before, and I just ... never really do anything with them; I appreciate that it exists, but I think I need more of a - I don't know, social element to it, I guess? Less open-ended, more directed? Their cards just don't really click with me somehow. And I can't find a Tumblr prompt/whump/whatever themed promptfest thing for July.

So I'm kicking around a few different ideas. Why not throw it out to a completely nonbinding poll?

Whumpex reveals!

[community profile] whumpex revealed tonight! (And H/C-ex is supposed to in a few days, if it's not delayed. All the hurtcomfort all the time.)

I got:

Staying Power (Babylon 5, Londo & Vir, 4200 wds)

I asked for (among other things) Londo reacting to something bad happening to Vir, or Vir taking a hit for him, and my Mysterious Gifter took me up on it most delightfully!

As usual, there is a fic or two of mine running around loose in the collection as well.

A quick note for me and others

[community profile] justmarriedexchange nominations close tomorrow (the 10th).

I will almost certainly be signing up for this one, I'm just saying. And you do need three distinct fandoms for this exchange.

Always Left Behind, by DarkShade (G)

Show: SG-1

Rec Category: Jack O'Neill
Characters:Pairings: none
Categories: gen, episode related
Warnings: none
Word Count: 1601
Author on DW: [personal profile] darkshade (empty journal)
Author's Website: AO3 Profile
Link: Always Left Behind

Author's Summary:

Returning home after leaving his grandfather with the giant aliens, Daniel is fine.

Why This Must Be Read:

This is a Daniel-centric fic, primarily dealing with the SG-1 episode "The Crystal Skull" where Nick stays with the aliens.

Daniel is 'fine' -- for a certain value of fine. It takes Jack to assure Daniel that he won't always be left behind.

V is for Victory, by Aurora_Novarum (G)

Show: SG-1

Rec Category: Teal'c
Characters: Daniel Jackson, Teal'c
Pairings: Daniel Jackson and Teal'c Friendship
Categories: Gen, Hurt/Comfort, Episode Related
Warnings: Memory issues
Author's Journal: [personal profile] aurora_novarum
Author's Website: Aurora_Novarum's Ao3
Link: V is for Victory

Why This Must Be Read: Set in Episode: s07e02 Homecoming, this fic is a somber missing scene between a newly-returned Daniel and Teal'c. I love the way their friendship is shown and how accepting Teal'c is of whoever Daniel may be now, regardless of if he regains his memories, regardless of if he is exactly the same. It's a quiet moment and beautifully done.

Hornet Flight - Ken Follett

I like Ken Follett's books, and I like airplanes, and I like historical books, but this one was just kind of lackluster for me, unfortunately. It kept me reading, and parts of it were very engaging, but I ended up feeling kind of "That was it?" at the end. I mean, to be fair, this book is set early in WW2 and there's a lot of war still to go, but it feels like we didn't quite get the full plot or the amount of airplane that was promised by the title. The airplane-promising title manages to be a big spoiler while not actually delivering on its promise. (Although, to be fair, I guess it did get me to read the book.)

pop tarts reranking*

previous ranking. this post was inspired by trying the frosted (full frosting, not drizzled) cinnamon roll pop tarts.

*not every variety listed is currently available. some are seasonal, others were for a limited time.

  • frosted brown sugar cinnamon
  • s'mores
  • pumpkin pie (one of the few seasonal flavors i've tried, because who wants to commit to a box of 12 if you don't like them?)
  • cookies n' cream
  • chocolate fudge
  • chocolate chip
  • chocolate peanut butter
  • frosted banana bread. ok. could be more banana-y.
  • frosted (full frosting, not drizzled) cinnamon roll. not as good as brown sugar cinnamon
  • lemon crème pie. lemon things are either; not very lemony, lemony, or LEMON! these are the second.
  • peanut butter
  • fruit ones
  • pretzel pop tarts. dry & come apart at the end seams.
  • sugar cookie. would've been better, but smells like some kind of chemical. probably what they use to print the winter scenes on them.
  • frosted chocolate chip pancake. vague syrup flavor, no chocolate flavor. looks odd because of the chocolate chips on it.
  • apple jacks. barely tastes like anything, much less apple jacks
  • snickerdoodle. possibly tied with unfrosted, since they are too.
  • unfrosted ones
  • boston cream pie. boston cream filling is not meant to be eaten warm.

I Can't Be The Only One Thinking About Donna During This Ep, Right?

Still working on my old bingo card. I'm determined to get it finished before I tackle the newer one. Only one more square to go, now! If only I had any faintest idea what to do with it, other than what I did with it the last time the prompt came up on one of these cards. Anybody have any suggestions for what you might like to see me write for "We're Surrounded!" that don't involve writing a lot of action or plot? I mean, I don't know what the odds of me taking any suggestions are, but at this point anything to get the ol' creative juices flowing is probably welcome.

Anyway, here's the penultimate one:

Title: Meanwhile, Donna
Fandom: Doctor Who, Doctor Who (2005)
Characters/Relationships: Donna Noble & Rose Noble
Rating: General Audiences
Summary: She's forgotten something important. Again.
Tags: Episode Related, Wish World, Drabble
Length: 100 words
Author's Notes: Written for Gen Prompt Bingo, for the prompt "May morning." I have to say, I found "The Reality War" very disappointing, but I did love "Wish World" taken on its own, and how could I not write something involving it for that prompt? So, here's a drabble.

Meanwhile, Donna

Camera Obscura (by Mandysbitch) (Explicit)

Shows: SGA
Rec Category: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay
Characters: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard, Teyla Emmagan, Carson Beckett, Evan Lorne
Categories: M/M
Words: 3273
Warnings: none apply
Author on DW: n/a

Why This Must Be Read: it's Earth Christmastime, but on Atlantis it's mid-summer and the Australians have organized a barbeque. This is one of Mandysbitch's sweeter stories in which the boys get tipsy and end up in bed. It's hot and steamy, a nice slice-of-life, and soft-centered. Lovely writing, and a feelgood ending.
